The foundation of how Steven supports and works with Native American students, tribal communities, and professional staff started in the South Dakota higher education system with the creation of the Sacred Hoop Model. This culture-based model provides the proper approach to support the development of Native American students as they transition to and navigate through higher education. The Sacred Hoop Model remains a guide that Steven follows to create cultural programming and strategies to Indigenize the academy.
The scorecard offers a list of institutional indicators that are often found to be connected to success among Native American college students. This list is not exhaustive, nor is it meant to serve as a checklist that ensures a campus is adequately responsive to Native American students. Rather, the scorecard should be used by an institution to reflect upon their current capacity to support Native American students.
Learn how to incorporate the 4 R's Model of Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility in your work with Native American students and tribal communities.
